Medicinal Broth

As the days get colder and the evenings get darker, there’s nothing more comforting than a warm spicy broth filling your insides. Well, there is one thing more comforting.. a warm medicinal broth filling your insides, and nourishing you from deep within.

Herbs and foods are very interchangeable for me. Think thyme, sage or cinnamon. All three are popular additions to food, but all three are also staples in the herbal medicine world.

My love for food combined with my love for herbs means I LOVE pairing them whenever I can, and this recipe is nothing short of a hug in a bowl.

It’s packed with plants that will nourish and help you recover when you’re down. It’s the perfect convalescence food!

Astragalus

Astragalus is an adaptogenic herb. It helps the body to respond better to stress and supports the immune system. Like many roots, it’s very grounding and star herb for this medicinal broth.

Burdock root

Supports your body’s natural detoxifying systems which is crucial for a good functioning immune system. Burdock is also a digestive tonic, perfect for combating that sluggish winter digestion.

Nettle

Nettle is one of my desert island herbs. It’s packed with essential nutrients like iron and calcium and makes a great base to any winter tonic. Read more about the wonderful benefits of nettles here.

Cinnamon

A warming spice that helps to improve circulation, so perfect for those particularly cold days. Cinnamon is a powerful anti-microbial herb and thus makes a wonderful addition to any cold/flu recipe

Mushrooms

Mushrooms have amazing health benefits. They contain special sugars that support the healthy functioning of the immune system. Incorporate more mushrooms into your diet can benefit you in so many ways, plus they’re so yummy! If you’re new to mushrooms, here’s an amazing guide to help you navigate all the benefits!
