Junior Herbalist Club
What is it?
Junior Herbalist Club (JHC) aims to let children learn about the healing and medicinal plants all around them in a safe and supervised environment, whilst covertly incorporating core subjects including English, Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Botany, Latin and Cookery, as well as helping children to gain in confidence, improve fine motor control and develop a new skill set.
The 2-year course is proudly supported by National Institute of Medical Herbalists (NIMH). All sessions are run by Sophia Antwi, a qualified Medical Herbalist who has undergone specific training to deliver this course.
How does it work?
Junior Herbalist Club meets once a month. Ten lessons are delivered over a year from September to July.
Each month we focus on one particular healing plant. The children are taught how to identify the plant and its medicinal qualities correctly. They take part in fun activities whilst learning how to use the plant and are encouraged to participate in the discussion, adding their own thoughts and ideas.
At the end of each session, the children are given a worksheet to complete to develop a learning portfolio.
At the end of the year, the children graduate and are given certificates of attendance and a badge*. They can then proceed to the second year to continue their learning.
*It is expected that your child attends at least 8 out of 10 sessions to graduate at the end of the year.
By the end of the year, we hope that children will be able to:
Correctly identify many of the common medicinal plants growing in their gardens, parks, hedgerows and streets and that they will be able to distinguish between poisonous and non-poisonous plants.
Know the medicinal properties of many common plants.
Understand how to use some of these plants in first aid and how to use some plants for making medicines.
Enjoy listening to the stories and tales of folklore and history surrounding the plants and herbal medicine.
Know how to cultivate and harvest plants while respecting their environment and nature.
Who is it for?
JHC is aimed at children between the ages of 7 and 12. However, older children are also welcome.
How much does it cost?
The cost for the year is £200 per child (£20/session) and is payable in advance before the first session commences in September. This also includes all course material.
When and where?
The monthly classes will take place in Hertfordshire, Welwyn Garden City and will commence on Wednesday 25th September 2024. Places are strictly limited and as this course is very popular, early booking is advised to avoid disappointment.
